Principal Consulting Analyst

Kevin Kampman is a highly respected authority in identity and access management (IAM), information security, and risk management, with over 40 years of industry experience spanning technical roles, research, consulting, and leadership. His career includes significant tenures at Burton Group, Gartner, and currently TechVision Research.

Burton Group

Role: Kampman joined Burton Group in September 1998, initially as a Senior Consultant, later becoming Practice Manager and Senior Analyst, focusing on identity management, directory services, information security, privacy, and risk management. He managed a global consulting team and was responsible for research and analysis, developing methodologies for deployment and education in large enterprises.

Key Activities: He is the co-author of All About Network Directories, a practical guide to directory technology, and was recognized for his expertise in messaging, directory, and security consulting.

Notable Contributions: His published research and participation in industry groups (e.g., Automotive Industry Action Group Directory Services Workgroup) helped shape enterprise directory and security strategies in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Burton Group Integration: Burton Group was acquired by Gartner in 2009, and Kampman transitioned to Gartner as part of this integration.

Gartner

Role: At Gartner, Kampman served from January 2010 until his retirement in July 2022. He held several senior roles, including Research Director and Senior Director, leading large-scale security and IAM consulting engagements and managing teams across North America and EMEA.

Research Focus: He authored nearly 40 research publications on identity management, directory services, security, and privacy, and was a lead analyst for Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Identity Governance and Administration (IGA).

Consulting Impact: He advised and guided technology investments for major enterprises in finance, government, healthcare, and manufacturing, helping organizations align IAM with business outcomes.

Leadership: Kampman was responsible for operational management of a team of 30+ consultants, business development, and the delivery of complex consulting projects.

TechVision Research

Role: Since October 2022, Kampman has been a Principal Consulting Analyst at TechVision Research, a boutique advisory firm specializing in identity, security, and risk.

Focus Areas: His current work includes analyzing trends in identity, privacy, and security; advising vendors and enterprises on strategy; developing identity curriculum for higher education; and speaking at industry events on the challenges and opportunities in IGA and related fields.

Industry Engagement: He actively participates in webinars and conferences, offering actionable insights into why IGA initiatives often fail and how organizations can achieve better outcomes through governance, change management, and alignment between technical and business objectives.

Affiliations: In addition to TechVision Research, Kampman serves on the advisory board at the University of Cincinnati. He also served on the advisory board at Cayosoft until October 2025.
